This audio-documentary is a testament to the individuality of experience, but also, much like Saturnalia itself, to the will to share it as directly as possible. This “realist” approach calls for an equally deep listening experience: this work is strictly to be heard through headphones, possibly in an environment devoid of other sensory stimuli. Morning to morning, recording every bit and piece while traversing the festival, wandering through Macao’s halls and through the motley compound of sounds that make Saturnalia up, with the constant, ever-throbbing presence of bass frequencies to remind of the festival’s peddling to desiring bodies.Įven though what’s being presented here is but an edit of the complete recording, it’s been compiled in chronological order, with glitches, bass distortion, footsteps, conversations and “intimate” bits left in as integral elements of the work. His own body, his own ears and perceptions functioned as a probe, setting the equipment to capture an auditory image of the events as similar as possible to the one ensnared by his own hearing. Mucci tasked himself with documenting the whole thing, using a particular technique of field recording (in-ear binaural microphones) to parallel the immersive gestalt of the festival itself. That year the collective had been experimenting with a new format, structuring the festival as a 30-hour continuous experience rather than scattering it throughout several days.
